How to Change: Renew Your Mind
By Luis Ubinas
Now, I love my wife and kids. I enjoy every moment with them. I love growing with my wife, the joking around and the authenticity of our relationship. My daughters complete me. I can never stay mad at them for more than a few minutes. Once I look into their eyes I tend to remember the grace the Lord has on me. Why not express that to my children? But there are moments that I want to walk for a little while and get lost somewhere. Just come back when everyone is asleep. The truth is sometimes I come home from work and it is crazy. My daughter wants all the attention and my wife needs my assistance with house chores. I just want time to myself. However, I deep down think to myself, "Why am I being selfish with my time when I get home from work and even become irritated?" A lot of times I give in to my girls but most of the time I become proud and ignore the situation. By the end of the night I finally realize that just trying to change these things myself will lead to failure (Rom 7:14-15). It is through the strength of the Lord that I am able to change. Paul tells us that we must put to death the deeds of our sinful nature through the Holy Spirit (Rom 8:12-14). God wants me to understand the love He has for me and wants to help me grow closer to Him. Once I figured it out, this is what I start doing:
Start by Praying
Ask God for forgiveness and truly repent in your heart. Ask Him to renew your mind and align your will with His. To empty yourself and be full of His Spirit. To help you to put to death the deeds of the body.
Read the Bible (Optional Reading Romans 8:1-17)
Renew your mind through the Bible. By the Spirit, embrace the word of God. Read it, then take sometime during and after (throughout the day) meditating on it. Let it soak in and hear His voice.
Application
Put to death those deeds of the body with sword of the Spirit, His word. God speaks to us through the Bible. He reminds you of His promises. The fact that he is always with you and will not leave you gives us hope. Take time...read the scriptures slowly....pray during the reading....speak to God....through the help of the Holy Spirit, apply His word to your daily life and He will change you bit by bit, from the inside out! It's not easy...but have faith. This is what I have been doing a lot lately and I am keeping my eyes set on Jesus!
