Coffee

I love coffee.  I blame my brother and my son, Mitchell.  I can remember my first cup of coffee.  I was working on a project at Peace Lutheran Church in Lombard, IL, building something outside with some other men. Maybe I was in high school.  Some of the men wanted some coffee so I took some too.  It tasted awful.  But I felt like a man that day.  And in my head I knew, men drink coffee.
I don't think I drank another cup of coffee until I was 25, at least not real coffee.  I drank a lot of soda, mostly Coke and Code Red Mountain Dew as a kid, so I had the caffeine intake already going on.  But when my son Mitchell was born in 2011 I felt the need for coffee.  It wasn't about being a man, but it was more about wanting to feel awake after being up with him all night.  Mitchell was a fussy baby and we were new parents.  Oh what I would have done differently if knew what I knew now!  But with being a youth minister and having a young baby I drank a lot of coffee.
I remember my office at Compass EFC was at the very end of the hallway near the coffee pot and mini fridge.  Ed was a huge coffee drinker, all day, every day.  He would warm up his coffee and forget sometimes and the microwave would beep in front of my office for what felt like an hour, probably only a few minutes.   But then I would graciously bring him his coffee, or just turn the microwave beeping off...
Sean has made me into an even bigger coffee drinker.  He got me into specialty coffee makers.  I first bought a Pour Over Coffee Maker, a Bodum.  I use that every morning as I get up around 5:15am.  It's so much fun to use and it smells amazing.  I just bought a French Press and a Cold Brew.  Because of my diabetes and the taste, I drink it black.  Sean has taught me though that coffee can be a hobby.  And there is much to think about theologically with coffee producers, buyers, and fair wages.
Coffee to me is a blessing from God.  That may sound like an exaggeration.  But, God has made something I love and I enjoy and thank Him for it.  God causes the coffee plants to grow.  He waters the coffee plants.  He made the people who pick the coffee beans.  He made them in His image.  Will there be coffee in heaven?  Did Jesus drink coffee?  Would he drink coffee today?

"So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God."
- 1 Corinthians 10:31

Even drinking coffee.
